Mary Ann was solely in charge of North Kapunda Hotel during the early 1850s whilst her husband James CRASE was off at the Victorian gold diggings seeking his fortune.

An exciting moment in the history of Mary Ann's hotel business occurred when the Duke of Edinburgh arrived one day to officiate at the opening of the Kapunda to Adelaide Railway Line. The royal visitor and his entourage found it necessary to seek refreshment at a convenient place in the neighbourhood, so they dined at "Crase's Room" on 6 Nov 1867 (Kapunda Herald, 6 Nov 1868). 18,30
