Blacksmith, wheelwright and coachbuilder; apprenticed to W.J. Blake*, Fitzmaurice Street, from c.1880; member of firm, Bott* and Hely, adjoining Hely's Club House Hotel, Kincaid Street, from 1889; a member of the firm Hely, Donnelly* and Gain*, the Federal Coach Factory, at the corner of Fitzmaurice and Kincaid Streets from 1897; later the sole proprietor; the partial brick, partial weatherboard blacksmiths, painters and wheelwright shops and the shoeing forge were destroyed by fire in 1902; sold the Federal Coach Factory to Messrs J. Parsons* and Sons in 1905 (Morris NWWDHS No.245, Feb/Mar 1987). Active member of the Wagga Wagga Fire Brigade for fifteen years; presented with a gold medal suitably inscribed, on his departure for Sydney. Member of the Wagga Wagga Town Band for over twenty-four years, always playing the tenor horn; presented with a travelling bag when he left for Sydney; served on the jury e.g. at the inquest into the death of Dr Long* in 1897 (WWA May 6, 1897). Married Mary Martin in 1896. Left Wagga Wagga for Sydney in 1906; lived in Stanmore in 1926 (WWA May 6, 1893; Apr 1, 1897; Nov 27, 1902; Sept 16, 1905; and Jan 25, 1906; and NSW Dir, 1903).
